Hamas must somehow be brought into the Middle East peace process because the policy of isolating Gaza in the quest for a settlement will not work, Tony Blair has told The Times.

Blair implicitly criticises the strategy by the Bush Administration and Israel of focusing all peace and reconstruction efforts on the West Bank. “It was half of what we needed,” he said.

During the last two weeks students at more than a dozen universities in the UK have staged occupations of lecture theatres and libraries in protest at the Israeli assault on Gaza.

The occupations began in the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London on January 13 (See “Students at two London universities occupy campuses in protest at Gaza attacks”) and quickly spread to other universities nationwide.

The Guardian reports: “A poll published in the Maariv daily yesterday gave Netanyahu 28 seats in Israel's 120-seat parliament, five more than his closest rival Tzipi Livni, the foreign minister and leader of the centrist Kadima party. Ehud Barak, the Labour defence minister, trails in third.”

Israel denies Gaza access to clean water, Obama and Aid to Gaza

(Fri, 30 Jan 2009) Israel has refused to allow a French-made water purification system into Gaza amid a drinking water crisis in the Palestinian strip. The French Foreign Ministry said Friday that Tel Aviv had blocked the entry of a much-needed water purification station into Gaza and had forced its repatriation.

A leaked report on Jewish settlements in the West Bank shows that the Israeli government was complicit in illegal construction on land owned by Palestinians, according ro an Israeli human rights group. Yesh Din said on Friday that the classsified information, compiled by the Israeli defence ministry, would allow it to help Palestinians sue the Israeli government for damages.
